Pharmacy in Phlux... the podcast

Pharmacy in Phlux is a video podcast for pharmacy professionals, the public and anyone interested in learning more about the issues facing pharmacy today. We will explore a wide variety of pharmacy issues from both a business and professional practice perspective. From business planning, succession, and acquisitions to medical cannabis and the opiate crisis, we will explore it all in the hopes of educating and providing perspectives for pharmacists and the public to consider. We will have a variety of guests on the program from time to time to tell their stories and respond to current issues and questions from the profession.

Episode #15 -Legal Aspects of a Pharmacy Sale or Acquisition - Part 2

In this follow-up to our previous eposide #14 we delve a little deeper into dealing with emplopyees as part of a pharmacy sale. We discuss employment agreements and severance responsibilities. We also talk about restrictive covenants and holdbacks as they are common elements of pharmacy sales. Additionally, we talk about representations and warranties in a purchase agreement and we touch on timing and potential costs. Finally, we review what to look for in a lawyer to help you navigate a pharmacy sale or acquisition.

Co-hosts Derek & Phil interview a young entrepreneurial pharmacist, Cathy Wang, about her experience going through a pharmacy acquisition when she purchased her pharmacy in the spring of 2019. They discusss Cathy's aprehensions and the importance of having the right advisors. Cahty also shares how she has adpated to being a pharmacy owner and some of the changes she has made since purchasing the pharmacy.

Derek & Phil discuss the succession planning process for pharmacies and how a pharmacist selling a pharmacy should proceed through that process. They talk about putting the right team together, review the Rxownership process and tools that are available, and marketing. They also discuss legacy issues and how those should be considered by an exiting owner.

In this episide David Pavan, Deputy Registrar of the College of Pharmacists of BC discusses the role of the College in regulating the profession and protecting the public. He talks about the various resources the College brings to bear to protect the public and help pharmacists understand their role. We also discuss the structure of the College, the role of public appointees and where that may go in the future. Finally, we talk about how the College manages complaints and the structure that exist to enable a proper and fair process.

We explore how pharmacists are coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. We dive into a wide range of issues including social distancing in the pharmacy, staffing issues, personal protective equipment and other measures, drug supply, demand for deliveries and anything related to the day to day operation of the pharmacy.
